NAFSA 54th Annual ConferenceSan Antonio, TXMay 26 - 31, 2002
At the top of the registration form, there is a highlighted pre-registration deadline of April 12, 2002. This deadline is not for advisers. You may register at the special pre-conference membership rate ($295) up until the start of the conference. If you know that you are attending before April 12, it is a big help to NAFSA if you can register by that date. The bottom of the first page of the conference registration form has a line about membership in NAFSA for $92 - $275. This is a SEPARATE fee from the registration for the conference. You do not need to be a member of NAFSA to attend the conference and can feel free to leave this line blank. |
Regional Educational Advising Coordinators (REACs) provide several types of services for advisers. Posts may request the services of the appropriate REAC to visit a local advising center and conduct needs assessment and training on-site. Training conferences are typically organized by the REAC and advisers in each region, allowing selected advisers to meet and participate in training activities and sessions. Smaller, single-country or sub-regional workshops and seminars take place throughout the year and may be organized by REACs and/or advisers. REACs also manage region-wide e-mail discussion lists, produce a quarterly newsletter, and develop information packets for advisers. All requests for REAC assistance and participation in conferences and training activities should be addressed through ECA/A/S/A.
The Individual Professional Development Program offers a limited number of one-week individual professional development grants to educational advisers who have already made their own arrangements to attend the annual NAFSA national conference. These grants allow participants to enhance their conference participation with campus visits and other consultations preceding or following the conference.
Requests by educational advisers for funding assistance to attend annual NAFSA conferences are solicited via cable in the fall preceding the conference year. Decisions on requests are made based on date of receipt of request; level of planned participation by the applicant (panel presenter or chair, NAFSA team member, etc.); justification of need. Funding decisions are announced approximately six weeks prior to the conference.
The U.S.-Based Training Program (USBT) provides training in the U.S. for mid-level overseas educational advisers. The training includes workshops on advising topics, an internship at a US academic institution, and attendance at a national or regional NAFSA conference. The USBT Program is scheduled for spring, and, if budget levels permit, a fall program may also be scheduled.
The OSEAS (overseas) Regional Linkage Program provides a professional development opportunity for senior-level overseas educational advisers. This one-week program includes participation in one of the NAFSA US-based regional conferences and site visits to nearby educational institutions. The program seeks to facilitate dialogue between overseas and US-based professionals and to give seasoned overseas advisers an opportunity to serve as resources at US international education conferences.
