NATO Expresses Solidarity with U.S.Pledges support and assistanceThe North Atlantic Council expressed its solidarity with the United States and resolutely condemned the barbaric terrorist acts committed against the American people in New York and Washington D.C. At a special meeting on the evening of 11 September, the NATO allies declared that the United States can rely on their support and assistance. NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson condemned the attacks "in the strongest possible terms" and firmly underlined "the need for the international community and the members of the Alliance to unite their forces in fighting the scourge of terrorism. Following is the text of the statement by the Secretary General of NATO Lord Robertson: I condemn in the strongest possible terms the senseless attacks which have just been perpetrated against the United States of America. My sympathies go to the American people, the victims and their families. These barbaric acts constitute intolerable aggression against democracy and underline the need for the international community and the members of the Alliance to unite their forces in fighting the scourge of terrorism. |
