Text: Powell to Travel to Chile for APEC Forum, Egypt for Talks on Iraq
(Trip is part of effort to promote trade in Asia, security in Iraq) (220)

The U.S. Department of State announced on November 10 that Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will travel to Santiago, Chile, for the Asia-Pacific Economic forum November 17-18. He will then travel to Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, November 22-23 to discuss Iraq's democratic transition.

STATEMENT BY RICHARD BOUCHER, SPOKESMAN

Secretary Powell Travel to Chile and Egypt

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will depart Washington on November 17 for travel to Santiago, Chile for meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. He will attend the APEC Ministerial Meetings (Nov. 17-18) and hold bilateral meetings with counterparts while in Santiago. At the APEC meetings the U.S. will promote trade liberalization and facilitation and support efforts to ensure security, enhance transparency, and fight corruption.

Following the APEC Leaders Meeting (Nov. 20-21) attended by President Bush, Secretary Powell will travel to Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt to participate in an expanded regional conference (Nov. 22-23), hosted by the Government of Egypt, to discuss promoting security and stability in Iraq and Iraq's democratic transition.
