White House Report, May 11: Taguba Report
(Bush supports investigation of prisoner abuse in Iraq) (150)
White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan told reporters May 11 that President Bush recently received a briefing on the Taguba report, a Pentagon report on U.S. military abuses of Iraqi prisoners, from National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.
Major General Antonio Taguba testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee May 11 on his report. McClellan said Bush "has been briefed on some of the testimony that's going on, and he has watched some of it on television."
Asked Bush's opinion of General Taguba's testimony, the spokesman said that the president believes it is important to keep Congress informed about the investigations.
"It's important to having an open and transparent process moving forward," McClellan said, "and I think the military recognizes the important role the Congress has to play in these efforts as well."
