U.S. Offers Support to Spain Following Terrorist Attack in Madrid

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan told reporters March 12 that the United States has offered to assist Spain following the terrorist attack in Madrid March 11.

The White House spokesman noted that U.S. officials were in Spain and have been in close contact with Spanish officials.

"America stands firmly with the Spanish people in this difficult moment. This was a very brutal and vicious terrorist attack on innocent men women and children; it is a reminder that we are still at war with terror," McClellan said.

BUSH THANKS CHILE'S PRESIDENT FOR EFFORTS IN HAITI

"President Bush talked with President Ricardo Lagos of Chile and thanked him for his leadership on Haiti and his support for the United Nations Security Council resolution on Haiti," the press secretary said.

The president also thanked President Lagos for sending troops "to help preserve Haiti's constitutional democracy," he added.

JACK CROUCH NOMINATED TO BE AMBASSADOR TO ROMANIA

The White House announced late March 12 that it had sent to the Senate for confirmation President Bush's nomination of Jack Dyer Crouch II, of Missouri, to be U.S. ambassador to Romania.

Crouch currently serves as associate professor of defense and strategic studies at Southwest Missouri State University. He previously served as assistant secretary of defense for international security policy at the Department of Defense. He earned his bachelor's degree, master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Monday March 15: President Bush will visit new homeowners and tour
housing developments in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.

Tuesday March 16: Bush will meet with Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende of the Netherlands and later participate in a conversation on health access at the Chamber of Commerce.

Wednesday March 17: Bush will participate in a shamrock ceremony in the Roosevelt Room and attend a St. Patrick's Day luncheon on Capitol Hill.

Thursday March 18: The president will travel to Fort Campbell, Kentucky to speak with military personnel and have lunch with the troops.

Friday March 19: Bush will make remarks on Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and meet with soldiers and families at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Saturday March 20: Bush will make remarks in Orlando, Florida.
