Washington -- Representative Nick Rahall (Democrat of West Virginia) introduced a resolution May 8 to the House of Representatives welcoming Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifah Al-Thani, the amir of Qatar on the occasion of his visit to the United States.
House Concurrent Resolution 171 (H. Con. Res. 171) also thanked the nation of Qatar for its support during the recent conflict with Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq.
The Qatar leader met that same day with President Bush in the White House, where the President also thanked him for allowing U.S. and coalition forces to operate there during the conflict with Iraq.
Rahall is one of two Arab-Americans in the House of Representatives.
Representative Dana Rohrabacher (Republican of California) co-sponsored the proposed resolution, which was referred to the House International Relations Committee for action.
