Question Taken at April 25 Daily Press Briefing

France: China's Invitation to Evian G-8 Summit

Question: What is the U.S. position on China's participation in the G-8 meeting?

Answer: The G-8 meeting has, for some years, been discussing opportunities for enhanced dialogue and cooperation between the large, industrialized countries and developing, emerging or poor countries. At this year's summit in Evian, a separate meeting has been scheduled between the G-8 leaders and a group of about a dozen countries whose leaders have been invited to participate in a separate meeting during the summit. The United States welcomes the participation of China in this meeting.

See the Web site for the Evian Summit (www.g8.fr) which describes the meeting on one of FAQ pages regarding relations between the G-8 and the developing world.
