QUESTION TAKEN AT JUNE 28, 2002 DAILY PRESS BRIEFING
Zhou Mingwei Meetings in the Department
Question: Please provide a readout on meetings between the Deputy Director of China's Taiwan Affairs Office Zhou Mingwei and Deputy Secretary Armitage and Assistant Secretary Kelly.
Answer: State Council Taiwan Affairs Office Deputy Director Zhou Mingwei met June 27 with the Deputy Secretary and June 28 with Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs James A. Kelly. They discussed the U.S.-China relationship and cross-Strait relations. The Deputy Secretary stressed the importance of resolving cross-Strait issues through peaceful means and reiterated our commitment to our "one China" policy based on the three Joint Sino-U.S. Communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act.
