Congressional Report, July 11: Nominations Reported
(Senate panel clears 14 ambassadorial nominations) (270)

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has cleared 16 more of President Bush's nominations to high-level State Department posts, including 14 ambassadorships.

All but one of the nominations cleared by the committee on July 10 were reported to the full Senate for final consideration. A committee source said Senate approval was expected late July 11.

The group of nominees includes 12 slated to be ambassadors to other nations. Those individuals, and the countries in which they would represent the United States, are: William Farish, Great Britain and Northern Ireland; Howard Leach, France; Alexander Vershbow, Russian Federation; Daniel Kurtzer, Israel; C. David Welch, Egypt; Robert Blackwill, India; Wendy Chamberlin, Pakistan; Clark Randt Jr., People's Republic of China; Douglas Hartwick, Lao People's Democratic Republic; Charles Swindells, New Zealand and Samoa; Anthony Gioia, Malta, and Margaret Tutwiler, Morocco.

Also sent on for floor consideration were the selections of Pierre-Richard Prosper to be ambassador at large for war crimes issues; Francis Taylor to be coordinator for counterterrorism, with the rank and status of ambassador at large; and William Eaton to be assistant secretary of state for administration.

The only nomination cleared but not sent directly to the full Senate was that of Clark Ervin to be inspector general of the Department of State. Under congressional rules, nominations to that post must first be considered by the Committee on Government Affairs.
