Women's History Month - March 2002

Since its founding in 1980, the National Womens History Project has recognized and celebrated the rich and varied contributions of women to the history and culture of the United States. Each year, it designates a theme for National Womens History Month in the United States. This years theme, Women Sustaining the American Spirit, spotlights the diverse and interlocking stories of six women who have created and affirmed the American spirit.

The official commemorative poster for 2002 honors the work of women in sustaining the American Spirit. The poster features the image of six women whose lives spanned most of the 20th century and whose contributions have changed the America of the 21st Century. The women pictured are Mary Louise, Gerda Lerner, Alice Coachman, Dolores Huerta, Dorothy Height, and Patsy Mink. COURTESY OF THE NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY PROJECT.
