Senate Condemns Bigotry Against Muslims, Arab-Americans

By Steve La Rocque
Washington File Staff Writer

Washington -- The Senate has approved House Concurrent Resolution 227 (H. Con. Res. 227), a resolution condemning bigotry against Arab-Americans, American Muslims, and Americans from South Asia.

The resolution was first introduced into the House of Representatives September 14, three days after the largest terrorist assault in history resulted in nearly seven thousand men, women, and children killed or missing. The House of Representatives approved the measure September 15.

Senator Harry Reid (Democrat of Nevada) presented H. Con. Res. 227 on the floor of the Senate September 26. The Senate approved the measure later that day.

In the quest to identify, bring to justice, and punish the perpetrators and sponsors of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, H. Con. Res. 227 says, "the civil rights and civil liberties of all Americans, including Arab-Americans, American Muslims, and Americans from South Asia, should be protected," according to the Congressional Record.
