International Information Programs:
Publications, Paper Shows and Electronic Journals

The following publications and paper shows are available in English, French and Spanish. They are especially useful for Martin Luther King, Jr. observances and African-American History Month.

State Department posts wishing to order print publications or paper shows should send a cable to RUEHMLR/RPC Manila, with an information copy to IIP/T/CP, specifying the number of copies and the language desired. The order cable should include a fund cite for the cost of the publications and paper shows ordered, plus 20 percent for FPO/surface shipping and handling. If faster delivery is needed, please advise and RPC Manila will estimate cost. Order cable must be cleared by post FMO certifying that funds are available. Note: These materials are produced for use outside the United States. U.S. law forbids dissemination of these materials to American citizens, whether overseas or in the United States.

PRINT PUBLICATIONS

Introduction to Human Rights (1996) traces the development of human rights globally, and particularly in the United States. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s contributions are noted in the U.S. history section, and he is one of 12 human rights heroes profiled in the publication. This publication is Item No. 07 on the IIP Stock Publications List; cost is $1.30 per copy. (It also appears electronically on IIP's international home page at

However, the Internet version does not include the biography of King because of copyright constraints.)

Generation of Change: The Civil Rights Movement in America (1989) provides a history of the civil rights movement, together with a look at contemporary black America. The publication includes a brief profile of King and excerpts from his speeches and writings. It is Item No. 26 on the IIP Stock Publications List; cost is $1.50 per copy.

ELECTRONIC PUBLICATION

The Amistad Revolt: A Historical Legacy of Sierra Leone and the United States
A brief factual history of how 53 slaves -- captured by the Spanish, principally from the African colony of Sierra Leone -- revolted aboard the transport ship Amistad, were interred in the United States, and eventually won their freedom through the U.S. judicial system.

PAPER SHOWS

The following paper shows are available from RPC Manila on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of most shows is $40.00 per copy. Posts should order paper shows in the same way they order print publications. It may be advisable for posts to request air shipping for any of these shows needed for Martin Luther King's Birthday or African-American History Month 2002.

Portraits of a New Generation: African-American Leaders Living the Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. (2000) - Features biographical information on up-and-coming black Americans in business, politics, the professions, education, and the arts, along with 47 four-color photographs of the young leaders. Item No. PS043; cost: $40.00 per set.

Duke Ellington Remembered (1999) - This paper show celebrates the life of one of America's and the world's premier jazzmen. Also features photos with and reminiscences about other jazz greats who were colleagues of Ellington's. Item No. PS009; cost: $100.00 per set.

Singing the World: African-American Writers (1996) - Introduced by a brief history of black American literature, this paper show features 14 of the late 20th century's most renowned authors. They are: Gwendolyn Brooks, James Alan McPherson, Terry McMillan, Ntozake Shange, Charles Johnson, Houston A. Baker, Jr., Samuel R. Delany, Gloria Naylor, John Edgar Wideman, Jamaica Kincaid, Dori Sanders, Rita Dove, Walter Mosley, and Maya Angelou. A brief biography, photographs, and an excerpt from each writer's work are included. Item No. PS027; cost: $40.00 per set.

JAZZ (1995) - This paper show sketches the history of this uniquely African-American musical art form and discusses the careers and techniques of virtuosos of instrument and voice. "Jazz" captures the spirit of the music in vintage photographs of jazz greats and original illustrations of contemporary musicians. Item No. PS015; cost: $40.00 per set.

Human Rights: Liberty, Justice, Equality (1995) - "Human Rights" features 10 original poster-size illustrations by prominent American artists and accompanying quotations drawn from a variety of international sources, including the Magna Carta, Thomas Jefferson, Mary Wollstonecraft, Nelson Mandela, and Bill Clinton. A two-panel introduction provides a brief history of humankind's developing awareness of its inherent rights. Item No. PS013; cost: $40.00 per set.

Songs of My People (1994) - This paper show is derived from the popular book Songs of My People, a photographic chronicle of the African-American experience by African-American photojournalists. A team of 50 photographers traveled across the continental United States to create a portrait of African-Americans today, telling stories of pride, determination, courage, tragedy, and triumph. Item No. PS028; cost: $40.00 per set.

Black Filmmakers in America (1992) - A new generation of black writer-directors is producing a wealth of films that address compelling social and political issues from an African-American perspective. Along with an overview of black filmmaking, this paper show includes profiles of Robert Townsend, Spike Lee, John Singleton, Charles Burnett, Matty Rich, Mario Van Peebles, Julie Dash, Bill Duke, William Greaves, Reginald Hudlin, Charles Lane, and Euzhan Palcy. New Visions: Ten African-American Artists (1990) - Ten contemporary artists, who work in a variety of media and live in different locations around the United States, are included in this paper show. They are: Fred Brown, Beverly Buchanan, Sam Gilliam, Jonathan Green, James Little, Ed Love, James Phillips, Martin Puryear, George Smith, and Matthew Thomas. For each artist, one panel - suitable for framing - is devoted to a full-color reproduction of a single work of art. Item No. PS019; cost: $40.00 per set.

The Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. (1989) - This paper show describes the achievements of Martin Luther King as the central leader of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, and it illustrates the positive impact of his work on American life three decades later. The text interweaves the history of the civil rights movement with reports on the status of African-Americans in different facets of U.S. society. The final panel in the show is an illustrated portrait of King, suitable for framing. Item No. PS033; cost: $40.00 per set.

Trailblazers: A Century of Black Achievement (1988) - This paper show presents the lives and achievements of several African-Americans who lived in the 20th century and whose work has inspired important changes in the political, social, and economic life of the United States. Featured are scientists and scholars, artists and athletes, entertainers and entrepreneurs, publishers and politicians. Some are recognized internationally, some are little known outside their fields, but all have made lasting contributions to modern society. Item No. PS039; cost: $40.00 per set.
