Text: Powell Reiterates U.S. Commitment to N. Ireland Peace Process

Powell, Haass meet with U.K. Secretary of State John Reid




Secretary of State Colin Powell reiterated U.S. support for the Good Friday Agreement and the new institutions of Northern Ireland, according to the following statement issued after his February 11 meeting with U.K. Secretary of State John Reid:

Meeting Between Secretary of State Colin Powell
And UK Secretary of State John Reid

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Richard N. Haass, the administration's point-person for Northern Ireland, met UK Secretary of State John Reid this morning to discuss the current situation in Northern Ireland and ways to strengthen public support for the peace process. Secretary Powell congratulated Dr. Reid on his constructive and influential role in solidifying progress toward peace. The Secretary reiterated U.S. commitment to the Good Friday Agreement and pledged support for the new institutions of Northern Ireland, including the police service. The Secretary and Dr. Reid also discussed the importance of additional decommissioning and steps that could be taken to addres on-going violence in North Belfast and in other areas.
