Text: State Department Announces Delegation to UNGA AIDS Session

Secretaries Powell and Thompson head 50-plus member delegation

The U.S. Department of State June 21 announced members of the delegation that will represent the United States at the U.N. General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS to be held June 25-27 in New York City.

Secretary of State Colin Powell is the ex officio head of the delegation, with Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson serving as the ex officio alternate.

Tennessee Republican Senator Bill Frist, a physician-lawmaker who has been active on the AIDS issue, is a delegate from the U.S. Congress, as is Democratic Congresswoman Barbara Lee of California.

Many of the other delegation members are from various government health agencies that work on disease issues. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci, a prominent AIDS researcher, is a member of the delegation.

Seven members of the delegation represent non-government organizations or corporations.

Following is the text of State Department delegation list.
