TDA Supports Environmental Initiatives In The Czech Republic

Plzen, Czech Republic - Today, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) provided $357,500 for Plzen environmental projects. The Mayor of Plzen presided at signing ceremonies at the American Center where Senior Commercial Officer Richard Steffens signed two grant agreements on behalf of TDA. A $234,500 grant, awarded to the heating company of Plzen, Plzenskteplensk a.s., will fund a feasibility study to assess a potential waste-to-energy facility for the city. Additionally, Druid, a.s., an agricultural company, received a $123,000 grant for a biomass-to-energy feasibility study.

Plzenskteplenskintends to build a plant that transforms approximately 120,000 metric tons of municipal solid waste per year into energy. The TDA-funded feasibility study will help assess various technical and financial options for this waste-to-energy facility. Currently, Plzenskteplenskis considering installation of two incinerators to adequately handle the waste capacity. This project will assist the region in becoming compliant with the recently implemented and more stringent Czech Waste Regulations.

Druid intends to use waste-biomass-to-fuel cogeneration units to generate heat and electricity for its operations. Currently, frequent power interruptions from an outdated grid make it difficult for the company to maintain productivity. The feasibility study will assist in selecting an appropriate technology for the pilot project and formulate a viable strategy for implementation. Additionally, reducing the need for landfills and use of coal as a fuel source will provide positive benefits for the environment. Both feasibility study opportunities will be competitively bid among interested U.S. firms on the Federal Business Opportunities website.

TDA promotes American private sector participation by helping U.S. companies pursue business opportunities in developing and middle income countries. Through the funding of feasibility studies, orientation visits, specialized training grants, business workshops, and various forms of technical assistance, we help American businesses compete for infrastructure projects in emerging markets. In addition, the agency promotes capacity building initiatives and supports U.S. government trade, economic policy and development objectives around the world.
