03 August 2001 Text: Senate Confirms Congressman Asa Hutchinson as Head of DEAHutchinson will resign post in House U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft August 1 applauded the confirmation by the Senate of Congressman Asa Hutchinson, a Republican from Arkansas, as the new administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The U.S. Senate confirmed Hutchinson by a 98-1 vote on August 1. Ashcroft said, "Asa Hutchinson brings unparalleled experience in public service to the DEA." He added that Hutchinson "will be a crucial leader...approaching the problem with fresh ideas and strong leadership." Hutchinson, a congressman from Arkansas' third congressional district, said that although he regrets leaving his constituents, "when the president asked me to lead an effort that impacts both Arkansas and our nation, I felt duty-bound to do my part." When Hutchinson steps down from his congressional seat, Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee will set a special election to fill the vacancy.
