U.S. Environmental Groups
Decry "Pieing" of Official

From National Environmental Trust

Wednesday, November 22, 2000

The Hague, Netherlands -- The undersigned organizations deplore the unfortunate action undertaken today against Frank E. Loy, Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs and Head of the U.S. Delegation.

Many are frustrated by the slow pace of negotiations and the lack of domestic action against global warming, especially in those countries that are largest contributors to the problem. However, we believe there are more constructive ways to achieve our goals of preventing dangerous climate change.

NGOs have played a constructive role in the climate change negotiations since their inception. We will continue to take an active role in the future as experts and advocates for the environment.

We hope that today's occurrence will not hamper the efforts of the climate summit to conclude rules for a fair and effective Kyoto Protocol, or for

industrialized nations to accelerate their efforts to reduce their domestic emissions of global warming pollution.
