
Since January 1995, Mr. de Silguy has been European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs. Before joining the Commission, Mr. de Silguy was a Minister plenipotentiary for the French Government (1994) and was an adviser on European affairs in the Office of Prime Minister Balladur (1993). He also served from 1986 to 1988 as a technical adviser on European and international economic and financial questions in the Office of former French Prime minister Jacques Chirac. From 1988 to early 1993, he was an International Affairs director for Usinor Sacilor.
Mr. de Silguy spent one year (1985-1986) at the French Embassy in Washington as Counsellor responsible for economic affairs. From 1981 through 1984, he was Deputy Chef de Cabinet in Brussels for former Commissioner Vice President Francois Xavier Ortoli. Between 1976 and 1981 he served in the Economic and Financial Affairs directorate of the French Foreign Affairs Ministry. He graduated with distinction in law from the University of Rennes in 1971 and received an MA in Public Law from the University of Paris the following year. He is also a graduate of the Institut d'Etude Politique and the Ecole Nationale d'Administration. He is married and has two children. He was born on July 22, 1948, in Rennes.
