WINTER PARK SKI TRAIN TO HOST LEADERS' SPOUSES
Denver -- First Lady of Denver Wilma Webb, First Lady of Colorado Bea Romer and Debbie Willhite, Executive Director of the Denver Summit of the Eight today announced that the Winter Park Ski Train has been selected to host the spouses of the world leaders during the Denver Summit of the Eight. The spouses of the world leaders who will be attending the summit will take the trip to Denver's Winter Park Resort and dine at the Lodge at Sunspot located on the 10,700 foot summit of Winter Park mountain. The spousal event will take place on Saturday, June 21, 1997. Later that evening, the spouses will join the leaders at the Fort Restaurant for dinner and then attend the "Saturday at the Summit" event to be held at the National Western Events Center.
"The Winter Park Ski Train has been a Colorado tradition for over 50 years," Mrs. Webb said. "While the train typically carries skiers back and forth from Winter Park, this time the train will transport the spouses of our world leaders and allow them to enjoy the natural beauty of the Colorado Rocky Mountains and to get a feel for one of our most popular recreational activities."
"Colorado is home to some of the world's top recreational activities," said Mrs. Romer. "Riding the Winter Park Ski Train will give the world leaders' spouses an opportunity to see the majesty of this great place we are so proud to call home."
"The trip to Winter Park will be a highlight of the Summit," Debbie Willhite, Executive Director of the Summit of the Eight said. "One of the goals of the Summit is to recognize the host City and State and share with the rest of the world their unique attractions. Clearly the Winter Park Ski Train and the Winter Park Resort will represent the wonderful environment and recreation that Colorado citizens enjoy."
"This is a real pleasure for Winter Park Resort and the National Sports Center for the disabled to showcase our beautiful area for such a distinguished group of guests," said Jerry Groswald, president of Winter Park Resort. "'Colorado's Favorite Resort' is best known for its world-class skiing but we welcome the opportunity to show our visitors what Winter Park has to offer during the Summer."
The two-hour train trip starts at downtown Denver's historic Union Station and follows train tracks through picturesque scenery of the Boulder Flatirons, South Boulder Canyon and the Continental Divide. The train then travels through the Moffat Tunnel before stopping at the base of the Denver-owned Winter Park Ski Resort, one of Colorado's most popular ski resorts.
The spouses will travel in one of three luxury railcars. These railcars, the Kansas, the California and the Utah, are equipped with comfortable, living room amenities that are typically popular for meetings and conferences on the trip to Winter Park.
