Drug Facts and Figures
A quick reference source on the dimensions of the drug problem in the United States and how U.S. agencies are addressing it through various programs. Charts and graphs visually summarize U.S. efforts to alleviate drugs and their attendant problems. Includes a list of acronyms and sources for additional information.

Focus: Electronic Commerce: A Conversation with Ira Magaziner
Describes the U.S. government's efforts to encourage the buying and selling of goods and services over the Internet. The pamphlet features an interview with ex-presidential adviser Ira Magaziner, the architect of the Clinton administration's plan for furthering business on the Internet, and excerpts from the Commerce Department's “Emerging Digital Economy” report.

Freedom Papers
A series of seven papers that provide practical information, case studies, and sources of information on issues of democracy-building. Topics include: free and independent media; teaching democracy; the role of the legislature; an independent judiciary; administering higher education; public access to government information; and creating and disseminating law.

Human Rights and You
The handbook contains basic United Nations, European system, and OSCE human rights documents, plus case law, a “how-to” guide for filing a human rights petition, and a listing of governmental and nongovernmental organizations with human rights concerns. Of special interest to judges, attorneys, human rights specialists, and the media in the Newly Independent States and Central Europe, the book is available in English and in Russian.

Livable Communities: Improving Life in the World's Megacities
Focuses on the need to plan and rationally manage urban growth and suburban sprawl in an era of increasingly limited natural resources. The texts include a speech by former vice president Al Gore, an article from “Worldwatch” magazine comparing development in Portland, Oregon, and Curitiba, Brazil, and an interview with Janice Perlman, an authority on the growth of megacities worldwide.

Prosperity Papers
A series of seven papers that provide practical information, case studies, and sources of information on issues related to market economics. Topics include: fostering entrepreneurship; attracting foreign investment; privatizing state-owned companies; organizing and financing a small business; elements of entrepreneurship; business and commercial law; and protecting intellectual property.

Sustainable Economies
Explains how the current world economy, based on "carbon cycle" energy usage, is leading to unsustainable usage of natural resources. It suggests new forms of advanced economic development and technology that could help the global population break free of the carbon cycle and replenish the planet's resources while continuing to develop economically.

Telecommunications in an Information Age
Explains the origins of the Internet-based telecommunications revolution that is sweeping the world and U.S. support for the Global Information Infrastructure. It includes “case histories” of how ordinary people use the new technology and a glossary of telecommunications terms.

United States Elections 2000
Background information for the U.S. presidential election held in November 2000, with articles on American political parties, the presidential nomination process, congressional elections, campaign finance, polling, and the media, as well as a glossary of political terms, and a bibliography.
