THE MEDIA
The media are viewed as playing an ambiguous role in the U.S.
election
process. Open and free media are considered an essential
prerequisite
for permitting the citizenry to make informed judgments in a
democratic
setting. At the same time, access to the media and guarantees of
the
fairness of the media are issues that continue to generate
considerable
controversy.
