1/2/97 Committee Activity Reports Due -- Committees must file with the House their activity reports for the 104th Congress. The reports must include a separate section summarizing the committee's oversight plans and actions taken and recommendations made with respect to each plan, plus any additional oversight activities undertaken and any recommendations made or actions taken thereon (XI, l(d)).

1/14/97 Election of Committees -- Standing committees must be elected by the House within seven calendar days of the convening of a Congress. Membership is selected from nominations submitted by their respective party caucuses (X, 6(a)(1)).

2/6/97 Committee Organizing Meetings/Adoption of Committee Rules - If your committee was elected on Jan. 7th, the committee must meet by February 6 to adopt written rules governing its procedures. If elected after Jan. 7, an organizational meeting must be held within 30 days after election.

2/6/97 Publication of Committee Rules in Congressional Record -- If your committee was elected on Jan.7th, you must publish your rules in the Record no later than February 6. If elected after Jan .7, then rules must be published not later than 30-days after the election of the full committee (XI, 2(a)(3)).

2/15/97 Adotion of Committee Oversight Plans -- Committees must meet and, with a quorum present, adopt their oversight plans for that Congress. The plans must be submitted simultaneously to the Committee on Government Reform and Oversight and the Committee on House Oversight (X, 2(d)(1)).

2/25/97 Adoption of Committee Budget Views & Estimates -- Committees must meet and, with a quorum present, adopt their views and estimates on all matters within their jurisdiction to be included in the concurrent budget resolution for the coming fiscal year. They must also provide estimates of total amounts of new budget authority and outlays to be provided or authorized in all bills within their jurisdiction during that fiscal year. (X, 4(g)). NOTE: THESE MUST BE VOTED BY THE COMMITTEE AND ALLOWANCE MADE FOR THE FILING OF VIEWS.

3/31/97 Publication of Oversight Plans -- After consultation with the Speaker, the majority leader and the minority leader, the Committee on Government Reform and Oversight must report to the House the oversight plans submitted by each committee, together with any recommendations for effective oversight coordination (X, 2(d)(3)).
